Lit candles setting the mood for an Andrzejki evening

Planning an Andrzejki Evening?

The night of 29-30 November has always felt a little special in Poland. Andrzejki, the eve of St Andrew's Day, brings people together at home or with friends, around tables filled with tea, snacks and laughter. People say it is not what it used to be, but that is only partly true.

We still talk about dreams, enjoy a laugh and look for signs, even if they are not always made of wax.

Perhaps not everyone pours wax through a keyhole anymore. Or perhaps someone you know quietly does it every year. Maybe you used to and have simply forgotten.

A few simple traditions

A name under the pillow: Write names, ideas or places on small pieces of paper. Put them under your pillow and draw one in the morning. Let it inspire your week. Chance can be surprisingly playful.

Wax through a key: The classic tradition uses melted wax, a key and a bowl of water. The resulting shapes can be funny, surprising or strangely familiar.

A pin above cups: Hide a coin under one cup, a bay leaf under another and leave a third empty. A little game of chance, with each choice suggesting a different future.

A modern take on Andrzejki

You do not need wax and a key. A group of friends and the question “What do I really want?” can be enough. Invent your own tradition. Write a letter to your future self, draw a travel destination at random or play music you have not heard for years.

Andrzejki has evolved, but we still enjoy wondering what might happen next. Do you have plans for this year's evening?
