Choosing a candle involves more than fragrance. The wick, the way it is made and how it burns matter too. Today, we are taking a closer look at wax, which plays a large part in the burn and fragrance release.
At Candle Room, we have worked with many types of candles for 16 years. We do not limit ourselves to one material, and we pay attention to what brings customers back.
Paraffin
Common in mass-produced candles, paraffin offers an accessible price and consistent manufacturing results. Many paraffin candles have a quickly noticeable, strong scent.
It can produce smoke or soot, particularly when the wick or burning conditions are unsuitable. It is not our first choice, but we keep it in our range for customers who appreciate its fragrance intensity, variety of formats and price.
Rapeseed Wax
Popular with some European makers because the raw material can be sourced locally. It provides a neutral fragrance base and can offer a steady, predictable burn in a well-made candle.
Soy Wax
A popular choice for scented candles. In our experience, well-made soy candles can offer an even flame and a fragrance that develops gradually.
Fragrance strength depends on more than the wax: the scent itself and the quality of the formulation matter. A soy candle can have a very noticeable fragrance, often building over time rather than appearing all at once.
Beeswax
A natural wax with a distinctive character, a gently honey-like scent and a warm glow. It is less commonly used for fragranced candles because its own aroma can be difficult to combine with other scents.
Price and Preference
In our range, paraffin generally sits at the lower end of the price scale, soy and rapeseed in the middle, and beeswax at the higher end. Raw materials and production methods help explain these differences.
There is no single right choice for everyone. Some people want a strong fragrance immediately, others prefer a gradual scent, while others focus on ingredients or origin. The quality of the candle and how you burn it matter as well as its wax.
